Solo Ski Holidays - For Women
Eleventy hundred years ago, on a bit of a whim, our little family upped sticks from a small Scottish village to a small Italian Village. We never intended to stay. ‘Let’s go for a year’, we said. And one year became two, which then became three. The rest is history. We are still here.
Our Italian odyssey has been a wild one, full of hiccups and unexpected hurdles and joys, but one of the things we discovered, was to take a ski holiday week, or Settimana bianca, as they say here, kids in tow, in the beauty of the Eastern Italian Dolomites – Alto Adige.
Have you ever been to the Dolomites?
If you have, then you already know never to ski anywhere else, and if you haven’t, you one hundred percent must. There are many beautiful places in the world, but there are genuinely few that simply take your breath away. Miles upon miles of glittering snow, clear blue skies with over 300 days of sunshine, and jutting towers of stalagmite rock, dusted in snow, reflecting pink in the sunlight.
Italian snow resort culture is generally friendlier and more laid back than other European resorts. Italians do skiing pretty much like they do everything else – happily, socially, with the prospect of good dining never that far away.
In terms of skiing, there are over 1200kms of linked pistes over the 12 differing ski areas, each with its own distinct character. Stylish Cortina, with steep pistes and Olympic history, exclusive and elegant Alta Badia, wild Marmolada glacier, fast and furious Kronplatz, open and unhurried San Pellegrino. Each offers outstanding scenery, culture and history, pistes of groomed corduroy perfection, superb Italian gastronomy at decent prices in an array of gorgeously conceived mountain huts, complete with deck chairs for a bit of sun catching.
The idea for WoWSkiTours came from a truly defining ski moment. Having learned to ski myself as an older adult, I had had my fair share of falls and whimpering moments being egged on by a husband who had grown up skiing.
EMPATHY SCORE = ZERO.
Some years ago, now a competent skier, I was coming off the gondola at the top of an steep, icy, and unerringly bumpy red, one I’ve never skied well, even now. A familiar scene was unfolding; a woman, skis off, sobbing profusely. She was screaming hysterically at her partner, who had skied off some metres below, and who was uselessly coaxing her to redon her skis and join him, The woman’s fear and pain were tangible. I could feel their ensuing argument. I empathised with her totally.
And that is where our burgeoning idea for WoWSkiTours began. Women and men, it seemed to me, approach challenges and critical moments of uncertainty very differently, with the ski environment highlighting those potentially delicate situations. Women assess the risks, are unnerved by performance, and although often technically able, need reassurance, approval and empathy. I reasoned that there must be many, many women, regardless of ski level, who would simply prefer to ski in a testosterone ski environment, where they can be themselves, where they can be just, well, Women!!
And so, with twenty years of Dolomite ski knowledge under our belts, being bilingual in Italian and English, and holding a bevvy of ski instructor qualifications, the mum and daughter Team that is now WoWSkiTours, are inviting you to join our Women Only Weeks. Set in the playground we know best, the most beautiful mountains in the world, the Italian Dolomites, we’ll take you on a week’s whistlestop tour of daily itineraries, taking in the best sights, experiences, and gastrogoodies possible, and all on a pair of skiis! We’ll throw in some girly giggles, some expert ski tuition, and all the reassurance, support and handholding we can muster.
You’ll surprise yourself with just how well, in the right context, you can ski.
That’s why we call it WoW.
Because we are. And so are you.
