Solo Ski Holidays - For Women
WHAT HAPPENS ON A WOWSKITOUR
So you’ve taken the plunge and booked a WoWSkiTour. The date is circled. Your flight confirmation has arrived. Your WoW deposit has been taken and an invoice has arrived.
Oooer! How EXCITING, you say. Oooer! What have I let myself in for?
Sadly, unless you're one of life’s lucky tranquil and serene persons, those nasty, insidious little doubts will start creeping in, as the weeks roll by, about your travel plans, your baggage allowance, what to bring, your fellow group participants, your ski level.
At WoW, we truly understand all of those nagging anxieties. Firstly, we are women ourselves and hostages to the range of female emotions. Secondly, we ourselves partake in huge amounts of pre season training. Just like you, we book courses in places we don’t know, worry about transport and accommodation, train in a group with others unknown to us, and give ourselves up openly to public criticism, as we practise drills and exercises in front of the group, all in the name of improvement. Ski performance anxiety exists hugely for us too.
With this in mind, having been often in our clients’ shoes, we try to preempt our own ski experiences so that we can manage our clients’ needs more sympathetically and easily.
In terms of booking and payment, we try to make the process both personal and sleek. After confirming verbally by telephone, you’ll be asked to pay a PayPal deposit. Your balance is required 10 weeks before your departure date. Confirmations will be sent directly to your mail address. We will also request your flight details so that we can organise your private taxi for the appropriate time slot. We will also send you a mail reminding you of what to bring, what to expect, and any other information we feel is appropriate.
WhatsApp - Generally speaking, the next you will hear from us is a few weeks before your departure when we request you to join your dedicated WhatsApp group. Here we communicate all your travel arrangements for your private airport transfer, ask for any dietary requirements, and invite you to introduce each other. You can also ask us anything you are unsure about, private message us, or arrange to travel together if you are arriving from the same place. We can give advice on ski hire, ski passes and ski insurance. Your WhatsApp group is a great platform to exchange, request and share information.
Transfer - Once you’ve collected your bags, simply follow the airport plan we send to the pick up point, and you’ll be in your shiny private Mercedes van on the way to your accommodation.
Once in resort, we meet you at your hotel accommodation. You’ll be asked for your ID details prior to arrival so that the hotel can check you in before your arrive, and thus issue your room keys, with no time wasted physically checking in. Your holiday includes a tasteful room with single occupancy, so you have plenty of room to stretch out. Once you’ve settled in, been shown round to the ski room and spa areas, we will meet you in the bar area for a very Welcome Drink, an introduction to who we are, and plans for the first day. We run through the most fundamental details and then you’ll head off for dinner.
DAY ONE
A Finding your Ski Legs Day
After breakfast, at roughly 0845, we take you to collect any necessary ski equipment and ski passes. We take Day One very easy, knowing some people may not have been on skiis for a whole year. Your group will be a maximum size of 8.
We’ll then take you to the main lift where we will meet our lovely local ski instructors, Stefka, Simon and Giusy. They will be with us all week. Throughout the week, they will provide you with some formal ski instruction for roughly an hour every morning. This instruction will focus on ONE aspect of ski performance every day, building up to create a whole ski package as the week goes on. You might be asked to do some ski drills and exercises, or to adapt your skiing to compensate for certain snow conditions.
Thereafter, we’ll be setting out on our itinerary, with the instructors on hand all day to remind you individually of what to work on.
We prebook your ski lunches, so that no queueing for tables is required, though sometimes you may have to wait 5 minutes or so. On Day one, we’ll be staying local and the rifugio we choose will require only a short ski home after lunch.
DAYS 2 - 6
Each day, we will attempt to ski in differing ski areas. The ski pass we ask you to buy is a Dolomiti Superski pass, and this will allow us to ski in any of the 12 differing Dolomiti Superski areas.
We will have van transport to take you to the best itineraries, and each day we will assess group level, snow and weather conditions, to decide which area we will ski that day. You might go to Cortina, or to Kronplatz or to Santa Cristina to ski La Longia, the 12km descent through the valley, or to the incredible Hidden Valley at Lagazuoi to pick up the horse tow at the end of the descent. Take a peek at the drop down menu ‘Our Itineraries’ to see what you might be skiing down.
As a general rule of thumb, and throughout the week, we prefer to start early, stop for mid morning coffee, and take a lateish lunch so that the afternoon ski is shorter. We find that an early lunch interrupts the day, and we’d prefer to take advantage of good early snow conditions and not having an afternoon rush, especially if the snow is tricky.
Our lunch venues are based on the best food available in the area we have decided to ski in that day. We definitely have our favourites. There is only ONE place for pumpkin soup!! These may be chic mountain huts or traditional venues, but the prices will be competitive and the food excellent.
Once back at the van or at the main lift, roughly around 1600, we might stop for an aperitivo on the way home, a spot of retail or just drop you at the hotel where we will unload your kit to take to the ski room, so that you can go for a drink, enjoy a swim, or relax in the spa.
On a Tuesday or Thursday evening, we like to book the local pizzeria, so that we can all eat together. This is mostly covered in your WoW package. It means we get you out of the hotel so that we can all eat together and giggle under different circumstances. The wine often flows!
Remember Wednesday is your day off to free ski at your leisure, sleep late, or do whatever you please. We do reserve the right however, in bad weather, to swap over the Wednesday to another day.
On Friday we’ll advise you of your departure time and advise you to settle any outstanding bar bills at the hotel.
We’ll also be on hand all day every day to answer questions and help out.
Don’t be afraid to ask. We’re with you from the start of the tour, right to the very end.
